I'm essentially an amateur as well, when it come to being a rebuild mechanic. I'm good on electronics and tune-ups and a carb like the simple carb on the H. Here are a few considerations for you to decide: (1)- You'll probably need a set of ridge-reamers to remove the ridges to get the pistons out, and you'll need sleeve pullers to get the sleeves out. (2) - You'll probably let a local engine machine shop measure the camshaft, and crankshaft for tolerances and recommendations on new bearings, and whether to turn the crankshaft or not. You probably would use the same shop to soak, examine, mill, grind and refit or replace the valves, etc. You'll have the block cleaned and ready when the head comes back. (3) - If it's running and you know the carb is good, ok - but if not, you'll need to rebuild the carb. Same for the electrics, etc. (4) - When it is all back and ready to put together, you'll probably want to paint, then reassemble - and you'll need to understand how to re-time the ignition and valve clearance, and you will need a good understanding of gaskets, torque wrenchs and how to use them (need one or borrow one). Also, getting it up and running after the rebuild is somewhat of an art, since they don't always respond to just hitting the starter. If none of this is scairy to you, then you can probably handle it if you are patient, careful, and look before you leap on anything. You can quickly undo repairs, and add big money before you know it. Also, be prepared to take weeks, and about $1,500 minimum (probably end up with more than that) doing the job. Screw it up - and you'll start over or virtually over again. Good luck. RKS
