I wouldn't tear it down. You can check the magnetism of the magnets by removing the cap over the coil and removing the coil to the side. Don't disconnect any of the wires. Take a flatblade screwdriver and touch those magnets they should attract that screwdriver with some effort. Here's a picture of a mag with the magnets exposed.
