The pump may have sheared the keway that drives it. If you had the steel lines off of the pump, and cranked the engine, the lack of any resistance or supply might have let it spin some. I would pull the pump off of the engine (simple to do and check the drive gear Key on the shaft. I have seen several with that failure. There may be a piece of gasket, or debris that got into the pump intake and wedged between the gears. Backing up the pump (make sure of rotation by looking at the drive gear in the opening while just bumping the starter. The pump turns opposite of that gear) may not clear the junk out of it. I would disassemble it to be sure it will not shear the key again. My best guess, JimN
