Gaskets vs RTV or Permatex

I am rebuilding the rear half of my 1929 Regular now, and the gaskets for the bull gear housings and such are no longer available. What would the pros and cons be of just using RTV or such instead of gaskets? There is no pressure built up inside, so that is not a concern. It would just have to hold in the gear oil. On my F-20, I made my own gaskets, and that worked out OK. It cost money and was time consuming. I am wondering if RTV would do as well so I can avoid this step.
