Rick, you're right that he should see 12V on the point side of the coil, with the points open - - except if the dist is "short grounded" as just happened with a case on this board. In that case, there will be no potential there, since the ground lead for the voltmeter and the "probe" would end up "common." To check for a short in the dist (which would maintain a constant charge in the primary winding of the coil), the dist-coil lead should be disconnected. If voltage then appears, but not before, then there must be a short in the dist. RKS
