sorry for the long post...
my tractor is a 2400A (industrial version of the 454). as far as i know it has a 100% mechanical clutch.
anyway, i was pulling some small shrubs out of the ground this weekend using a chain attached to the drawbar. (this involves a lot of slipping the clutch.) i pulled about 6 out. on the 7th shrub i heard a strange sound, like the hydraulic pump was sucking air so i shut the tractor off. (i"m not saying the pump WAS sucking air, just that it sounded like that.) i checked the level of the hy-tran - it was fine. i started it up again and the noise was gone. i started pulling again and then noticed white smoke coming from the clutch inspection hole - it smelled like burning hydraulic fluid. i shut her off. at some point the clutch pedal stayed down and would not come back up. i had to yank it back up by hand.
knowing something was very wrong i drove the 2400A back to my driveway - it smoked badly from the clutch inspection hole all the way during the trip to the driveway. the next day i started the 2400A - it started fine - no noises, no smoke. when i used the clutch it made that noise again. i drove it backwards and then forward and parked it so i could split the tractor in my garage. any ideas as to what happened and what is wrong? i think i need a new clutch, but what"s with the noise and smoke?
