I had the same problem with my M a few years ago. The pin that hold the shifter in place was worn and worked its way partially out one side. This allowed the forks to jump to the next rail when I shifted and effectively put the tractor in forward & reverse (if that's possible, just my guess) at the same time causing it to bog. I just pulled the shifter, realigned all the slides, and put in a new pin and retainers. Good luck!
