Sure it was oil? Could be some water had seeped or condensed inside and was just boiling off (was the tractor recently pressure washed?). Either that or the previous owner had squirted oil into the mechanism to try and work something loose. It's easy to take the cover off and check. You'll have to adjust the brakes on a regular basis anyway so it doesn't pull to one side (the mechanical linkage doesn't equalize itself the way hydraulic brakes do).
