Everything mentioned by Red & Bob is good, especially get the manual. The one question I have for you is what volt battery are you using?
It was origionally a 6V. A 12v will work but can get your starter hot in very short order(I use a 12v on my H & take it out to charge at the end of the weekend, the generator is shot anyway)be careful if you use one. A 12v will mask many other problems, but the generator(even if it works) can't charge it.
