Heating up a carb with a hair dryer

I have an M and about a month ago I couldn't get it to fire up when a cold spell came through. It didn't matter what position the choke was in, it just wouldn't fire. I'm not a big fan of spraying ether into the intake, so my uncle grabbed a blow dryer that he keeps in the shed and put some heat on the carb for about 15 minutes. What do you know, it fired right up afterwards. My uncle says he has to do the same thing to his Super C. I'm trying to figure out where there would be moisture in the fuel system or carb to cause a problem, because we keep our fuel tanks full in the winter to keep condesation in the tanks minimal.
