Fire !

A couple times today I shut off the 44A, half a second later, WHOOOF!, a 10" flame out of the exhaust, obviously some fuel is not all burning, and something, perhaps carbon is providing the fire to ignite after ignition is turned off.
I've got black smoke which means too much fuel, but all the adjusting of the carb, which only has one jet on it, does not seem to clear problem, will and adjustment to the float help in scaling back the fuel output?
