You have to be sure that the #1 cylinder is coming up on the compression stroke to check timing. Pull the cap off of the distributor noting where the #1 plug wire is. Take out #1 spark plug and turn engine until air starts coming out of the spark plug hole, then check for a notch on the crankshaft pulley - there should be a pointer on the front cover. When notch lines up with pointer with #1 on compression stroke the distributor should be pointing to #1 wire on cap.
