Well, the live PTO units on SMTA through 450 made the whining sound when they were shut off. Our SMTA does it too. Best bet is to either let the PTO run or disengage the seasonal disconnect under the tractor. As far as using the TA, shift it quickly, anything in between you are slipping the TA clutch which damages it. Also, remember that with the mechanical TA anytime you are in low range it is running the throwout bearing for TA clutch constantly - just like holding the foot clutch in. It is best to run in direct drive when possible. Do NOT use the TA for engine braking, the old mechanical ones are free wheeling in low range - you will go faster and faster down a hill and the TA can explode if it goes too fast. As I understand it, the new TA's are not designed for engine braking either. HTH Steven
