Here's the deal: The 10SI regulator is programmed to light a warning lamp whenever the ignition is "on" and the alternator is NOT generating current. In addition, current passing thru the warning light circuit tells the internal regulator to "turn on" when you first activate the ign switch, since the regulator cannot directly sense whether or not the alternator is spinning. The resistor is merely a substitute for the warning light - without either a warning light or resistor (or a diode) the alterator will not turn on. Why does the motor run with the ign switch off and there is no lamp or resistor? When the ign is off, the regulator sends current BACK OUT the #1 line until the alternator stops generating current (i.e. it stops spinning). Since the ignition switch is open after you push it in, the only other path this current can follow is thru the ignition coil primary. If too much current flows (i.e. the resistor value is too low) it's sufficient to fire the coil, and your motor keeps right on running. The resistor or warning lamp limits this current to a value lower than is required to fire the coil - or in the case of the diode, blocks the current flow completely. Hope this helps...
