Mike, I got a picture in my parts book, but no way to scan it. I'll try to explain (this'll probably be a long post).

The "long" side of the band goes over the top of the drum & goes to the top pin hole of the band lever. The "short" (most curved) side of the band goes to bottom pin hole. There are RH & LH band levers-be sure someone didn't switch 'em or try to use the same one on both sides. (See earlier post for parts #'s.)

Both band levers need to have the key slot pointed in a direction that will allow the split (where you clamp it together) on the brake arm (when its connected to the adjuster) to line up with the key slot when you install the pins.

Make sure the brake arms are facing the right direction & make sure the edge of the bands have enough clearance to miss the edges of the band lever as the band lever moves to tighten the band, after you install the pins. I've had to grind some bands down to make 'em narrow enough to allow the lever to turn far enough to engage the brake. Busted a brand new band afore I figured that'en out.

After that experience, I line everything up w/brake cover off, finger tighten it up & check to make sure its workin' before I put on the cover. Ya kinda gotta support the outside end of the brake arm when ya test it, but can be done w/aid of a significant other to lightly push on the brakes while yer a-watchin & yer pliers are actin' as the outside pivot point.

BTW, white lithium lube-the kind you lube car door latches with-works good to lube the pivot points on the band lever & ya don't have to be very generous w/it either. Hope this helps. I'll check back, so ifna ya got a ?, post it. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)
