However, GM has a great part available. When you rebuild a GM alternator for a tractor (a very easy process), try to find a marine voltage regulator. The voltage regulator on a common GM alternator is inside the unit. The marine regulator (also called self-exciting) is a one wire hookup. With this special regulator, the charge wire is the only thing you need to worry about. Pick up any hot-rodder's magazine, and you'll see one-wire alternators. This is simply the GM alternator with this special regulator in it.
