Your reference to a "front head plate" elludes me; I checked my exploded parts diagram and I'm not sure what you're talking about. Nevertheless, I went on out to the shop and -- using a rubber mallet and a length of wooden closet rod -- brought a little persuasion to bear and the second piston popped on out.
The allen screws remain troublesome, however. Applying a variety of penetrating oils and agents, so far not a one of them wants to budge. Nothing to do right now but keep at it. Same way with the two "relief valves" accessed from the underside. Nothing. Yet.
