Engin Oil Filter Drain on 806

There is a pipe plug that is supposed to be removed in order to drain the oil from the oil filter on my 806 gas tractor. This arrangement is typical on many IH tractors. Removing the plug makes kind of a mess on the filter housing and tractor side frame. I was thinking of putting a one or two inch long piece of pipe in there permanently so as to direct the draining oil further away. It seems as though this would work OK, but I was wondering if anyone else has done any novel improvements to the filter drain that are better than what I have described.
