Better means the alternator is turning faster. If the pulley on the alternator is half the diameter of the crankshaft pulley, the alternator will spin at twice the RPM of the crankshaft pulley. On a tractor, getting the alternator pulley down to 1/3 the size of the crank pulley would be ideal, but this is hard to do. If this were the case, when the idle speed of the tractor is doing about 450, the alternator is still turning at over 1200 RPM. That is the perfect combination. Since the crank pulley on my M is 4 inches, I would need a pulley of 1.33 inches. I can't find one that small, but I do use a 1.75 inch pulley. Smaller is better on the alternator. Take one look at the alternator pulley size on your car. Compare it to the size of your crank pulley. And remember, a car engine turns at about twice the RPM of a tractor during normal operation.
