I relly need some advice from those of you who have or know how to rebuild the front end of a Farmall H or perhaps other IH tractors. Let me tell you what I've done so far. Front bolster shaft is out, clean and repainted - no problem Put new steering shaft & bolster oil seals in the sector/worm gear casting - no problem Replaced steering shaft bearing and bolster shaft thrust bearing (both old ones were shot) - no problem Got a new felt spacer and spacer retainer (the metal spacer under the thrust bearing was good) - no problem. Here is where I run into unknown territory - the lower brass bushing. Mine is at best 1/8 of an inch thick leaving the bolster shaft with about 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch of play. In addition, the hole in the bushing (the one that is supposed to be there) is turned toward the rear of the tractor. Here are my questions.
1) Is it normal to have this much play in the bushing, i.e., should the bushing be replaced? 2) Shouldn't the bushing hole face the front of the tractor so that it opens to the grease zerk (hope I spelled that right)and allows grease to enter the INSIDE of the bushing? Right now grease squirts out over the top and bottom of the bushing and a very little bit makes its way to the hole at back of the bushing. 3) If I change the bushing, is it best to cut it out carefully or try to drive it out with a screw driver or punch. 4) And perhaps most importantly, will I be able to get the new bushing in without damaging it?? They cost $30 each and I can't afford too many experiments. I'm thinking about putting the bushing on dry ice to shrink it before trying to get it in. Any hints here, suggestions, special tools, etc? Since I have everything apart and have replaced virtually everything else I need to be really sure that all of the new parts will be lubricated correctly, and this bushing thing is bothering me. I really appreciate any help you all can give. I have been working on this tractor for nearly a year and am looking forward to the day in the near future where I can post a picture so you can see the results of your good advice. Thanks again.

Talk of the Town: How to Remove a Broken Bolt - by Staff. Another neat discussion from the Tractor Talk Discussion Forum. The discussion started out with the following post: "I have an aluminum steering gear housing with a bolt broken off in it. The bolt is about a 3/8" x 1 1/2" bolt. I've already drilled the center of the bolt out with about 7/64" drill bit the entire length of the bolt. Only one end of the bolt is visible. I tried to use an easy out but it wasn't budging and I didn't want t
