OK...I pulled out my book and I'll try to get you enough info to start with. Four valves are adjusted with #1 (front) piston at top dead center and the other 4 with #4 (back) piston at top dead center. 1. Reomove intake/exhaust manifold. remove valve tapet coverClean gasket mating area (to ensure proper sealing when installed). 2. Check for dirt and rust. Inspect for loosness in valve assembly and for worn or broken valve springs. 3. Put thumb over #1 plug hole and hand crank until until compression is felt. Continue cranking until TDC timing mark on flywheel is in line with the pointer on front of motor. (left side of engine rith under the governor shaft). Valve tapets have self locking tappet screws. Adjustment requires 2 wrenches, one to hold the tappet and one to turn the tappet screw. 4. Insert a feeler guage between the valve tappet and the valve stem. Clearance should be .015 with a cold engine. Turn the adjusting screw in or out as necessary to give slight drag on the feeler guage. REALLY IMPORTANT NOTE: The book has a diagram of which valves to adjust with #1 at TDC and which to adjust with #4 at TDC. Based on my interpretation, you count the forward most valve on #1 piston as #1 and then count back from there. So valves 1 and 2 are on cylinder #1 and valves 3 and 4 are on cylinder #2 and so on. With #1 piston at TDC, adjust valves 1, 2, 3 and 5. The follow the procedures for finding TDC on the compression stroke for piston #4 and repeat the adjusting procedures for valves 4, 6, 7, and 8. Replace valve cover with new valve cover gasket. Install intake manifold with new gasket. Done. I have simplified the procedures in the IH repair manual. Let me know if you need more help.
