Thanks for the tip...another possible problem, though. Using a timing light I can't get timing any closer than 30-40 degrees using all the travel of the distributor. Does the engine have a timing chain or gears? Could engine wear be causing the 30-40 degrees of mis-timing? If you take the distributor rotor off, and remove the two screws and cover plate you expose the gears. The rotor is keyed, so it can only go on one way, but the gears could be misaligned if taken apart and put back together differently, which could be giving me the 30-40 degrees. Are there match marks on those gears to get them lined up properly? I see a couple of notches scribed into the rotor shaft, and one gear has a grind mark on it, but they don't look like factory work...could have been added by a mechanic at some time. Those marks line up together, but could be coincidence, or marked incorrectly after the rotor had been disassembled. Judging from the wear on the screw slots on the cover, those gears have been gotten into before, perhaps to grease them since they are loaded with grease. Thanks for your help.
