John - If the coil draws less than about 3 amps with the ignition "on" and the engine stopped, it's a 12 volt coil - it doesn't require an external resistor. (Another check: If the coil doesn't get too hot to touch after running 15 minutes or so, it's a 12 volt unit).

Also if a mag has been converted to work as a distributor like the spare one you've got, there's no need for the impulse coupling (the "snap" you describe). The ignition will work fine with the impulse coupling still working, but it serves no useful purpose.
