Distributor vs. Magneto

This will show my ignorance....but, Why is it that a coil & distributor replaced the magneto? what's the advantage? My 48 cub has a magneto and the 52 has a coil & dist. I have been told that a magneto is better because it is a hotter spark. Is this true, and if so why is a coil an upgrade? I'm confused... even though that is not hard to do...
