Low speed gears

OK,heres the deal.A buddy of mine just bought a M with low speed gears.According to him,1st is too low for him and wants to change it to a regular M 1st gear.Is it the same as the M with a lower geared bull pinion or is it the same bull pinion with different gears?Ive never had any expierience with the low speed gears and I dont want to help him tear it down until I know!Thanx in advance!
