TD-9: tractor won't start on gas

I'm having trouble running the tractor on gas. What I'm doing now is pouring gas in the air intake cannistor and placing my hand over the opening. By doing that, while cranking, my hand helps with the compression for the gas to go through. The tractor starts, but I continue adding gas a little at a time. Is the problem with the carbuerator....or something else?? Gas is going to the carb, but tractor is not running long enough to switch to deisel. Help Please!!!!
