Steven, You're right if you assume the gen/VR are totally trashed. I was lucky enough that contact cleaner on the VR and brushes and springs on the genner were enough to get the amp needle pointing to the plus side. It's surely not as good as an alt., but I figure I can always put a charger on the battery for a few hours if need be. So far, I haven't - a normal 6v G1 wet batt does about 500-550CCA. The Optima is 750CCA -- and I got it wholesale, as they say. The alternator route, in my view, looked like it was going to require some hacking on the sheetmetal of my H. The goofy part of my thinking was that there was this original 6 volt coil on there that had lasted this long without ballast resistors hung on it -- and I like the way the coil looks, not to mention having the hood intact. I also liked the Optima because no fume leaks mean no corrosion on the terminals or in the batt box. I did have to grind off the tabs on the bottom of the Optima so it would fit diagonally in the new box (the old batt box had lost its bottom to acid corrosion). Like I said, it may not be pure logic. I know the VR/gen are weak, so when the Optima gives out someday, and I can get a 6V alt that mounts well for 60 bucks and a 6V wet cell for 40 bucks, it's closer to a toss up - that link to 6v pos ground alts above is interesting, wonder how they mount up under the hood. Just lucked in to a few things this time... so we'll see if the Optima really does last the 72 months they say, or my nifty coil lasts much longer, then go through the whole thought process all over again.
