Have an M. Runs like crap and sometimes not at all. Haven't tore it down yet but plan to 1. put in new engine crank bearings 2. re-ring the pistons 3. head job 4. complete tune up (new plugs, wires, points, condenser, rotor, and cap) 5. re-work the carb 6. as many new gaskets and seals I can put on without getting into alot of extra labor just for the new gasket or seal. 7. rework the 12 volt conversion (it is a little screwy). 8. new belts and hoses. Goal is to put tractor back into good running condition but not a flawless, mint mechanical condition as was when new or better. Will do a sleeve/piston inspection when it gets tore down. Doing the work myself except for perhaps the head job. My questions are--1. How much can I exspect to spend for the above? 2. Can front and rear main bearings be installed without removing crankshaft and or block. 3. Thinking of leaving camshaft, and the front of the engine (crank pulley, timing gears, front cover and so on alone). Any thoughts on that? 4. Am I overlooking anything? Should I consider doing more? What have you all done when not doing a complete professional overhaul replacing everything? Tractor will be used for light work, such as raking hay and such. Right now my number 2 tractor is a dependable H. Would like to have the M move up and take its place and move the H back a slot to number 3 spot. Any thoughts, advice, or comments will be appreciated.
