Alternator problems and battery life

On my 53 SM, I believe (note believe) my alternator took a crap. Someone before me really screwed up the wiring and there is a few improper terms for how it is wired to "work" now. I didn't do any of the wiring, I just fixed it so it would work and I plan on restoring it in a month so I will do it properly then. There were two wires I used to connect to allow my battery to charge, and when those wires were connected she would charge at amperage way over the gauge, so I would run it for a day (or a week) and then charge the battery. Oops, I've confused myself. I DON'T KNOW HOW MY TRACTOR HAS SURVIVED ELECTRICALLY!!! Well, now, I had my battery go dead one day and so we roll started it and now when we put the wires together...no charge. I ususally start it once or twice a week, and have had no problems, but I plan on driving it to school in two weeks and I don't know how reliable it is. How long would a battery last if the tractor was living off battery life? Without being charged, that is. I may see if the tractor will continue to run without the battery connected, and then I know I can make it 20 miles, but otherwise I don't know how she's doing right now. Thanks for any ideas on my rubbish.

What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
