I don't agree completely. Fuel expense is the #1 cost in driving O-t-R. About double what the driver's salary/wage is in some cases. Driver has to have a CDL now, which is an indication of some competence. Or at least knowledge of the law. If a trucking co. is going to stay in business Your correct they're going to watch costs, and fuel being the largest will get closest consideration and is the one the equipment choice can make the biggest difference in. License & fees is almost as large as wages and is just a cost of doing business. I agree drivers are under paid. But if they got paid what they're worth, and the trucks were maintained properly, with todays cost of new/newer equip. and fuel no one would be able to afford anything. Cost of an inexperienced driver in equipment breakdowns, lost profit, missed pickups or deliveries, etc. won't be tolerated by today's business'. If I don't get My parts when I want them My assembly lines can't make & ship Our product.... and I'm in a JIT plant. I have to have parts HERE on time... every time. Or My Customers get REAL MAD! I won't even get into the gory details about lawsuits from an inexperienced driver causing an accident. That may happen in Canada, but NOT here.
