1086 air conditioner

How do I add freon if the high pressure protection is preventing the compressor from running on my 1086? Doesn't it have to run to charge it? The compressor was rebuilt, has a new shaft and was converted to R134 two years ago and has run great untill this spring.When I turn it on, the high pressure light glows and the compressor doesn't run. I appreciate any and all responses.
