cover over rear engine bearing cage on F-30

I noticed a bit ago, that the cover , on the inside, of the rear engine bearing cage has a groove around it around 1/2in dia and arund 10in or so across. there is a gap on the inner flange of this groove. 2 questions. first in the groove ther was somwhat like a dried paper that cracked when I touched it. Was it a gasket. It covered the groove. 2nd, what was in the groove, and third, was the cover supposed top be put on sos the gap was pointing up or down or another direction. Still wanting to know about removing the rear engine bearing cage as i posted in an earlier post. thanks for hanging with me
