Marvin, I can tell you why the generator is hot but you will have to locate the cause. The reason the generator is running hot is due to the fact that the path, from the generator to the battery, for the electrical energy being generated has excessive resistance. The electrical energy has no place to go and is being dissapated as heat. This is a common failure mode and this is why generators burn out. The source of the high resistance could be; the points in the regulator are oxidized, the regulator is defective, a wire is broken or disconnected or wired incorrectly, a defective ammeter, badly oxidized battery cable, battery out of water. I probably left out a source or two of failure but you get the idea I'm sure.
