Hugh, I think the two clutch style PTO units are actually the same for the most part. As you said the later had the big hex nut on the top and could be adjusted while it was still on the tractor. The earlier lacked the access hole on the top of the PTO unit and had to be removed from the tractor to be adjusted. My dad has three Farmall 460s, one of each version.
