At least I had a fire bottle!

Posted by Dick Davis on August 04, 2003 at 03:44:40 from (205.188.209.140):

300 was cutting out, made it into garage, sediment bowl had content, took off gas line, removed bowl & retainer, unscrewed fitting, shoved paint can under to catch the last little bit of gas in tank, more gas than I thought, used second can, it was holding the fuel ok except I pushed it too far under, made contact with starter solenoid, lots of sparks, followed very shortly by ton of flames and smoke. Things that went through my mind in the next 1/2 second: which fire extinguisher is closer? Is it charged? Will Sick just this weekend told me of a fellow whose 300 burned entirely up when solenoid overheated under the gas tank! Will those flames reach the ceiling and set the building on fire? how much harder will I have to pull this pin to get it out? is this bottle big enough to put out this fire? can my wife see this from the kitchen?

Fire extinguishers are important and if you are stupid they are critical!

Didn't even scorch the paint, extinguisher was four steps away, filled 18 months ago and was an IHC 20 pounder. Dick Davis
