Stephen: 686 was the last of a line of tractor that were the most efficient tractors ever built. Efficient in that they could also do light work efficiently. I call these tractors an M with comfort although some people don't share that opinion. It all started with the Farmall MD in 1940, when tested at Nebraska it was declared to be the most fuel efficient tractor ever tested. From there on it only got better, and yes what you get in the 656, 666 and 686 is the solid reputation of the old M with modern day technology and much added horse power. My 656 diesel was truly the most efficient per horse power of the 16 different Farmalls I farmed with over the years. A friend of mine who bought a new 666 told me the 666 and 686 being a bit sharper on the hp than 656 did loose a wee bit on the fuel effeciency. Look at it this way, you don't have to fool with the glow plugs anymore, We felt the same way about the gas start M when the 560 and 656 came along with their glow plugs. Just an evolution of something good.

"Run in the house and get me a...."as I open th
