I have a 1940 (a) that did not have a temp gauge, To my knowledge it was an option. I did add one to mine, If you get the bracket for the gauge you can get a factory gauge and mount it, and the drill and tap the lower water outlet piece that mounts to the block, if you notice on the water outlet piece there is a flat spot on the top of it, this is where the factory drilled and tapped them if they had that option.My (a) does have a choke rod, but it does also have electric start.
