450 Farmall Thermostat

The thermostat in my 450 Farmall Gas was stuck open. Removed to inspect and change. Was not expecting to find 2 paths for the water flow. How is the water supposed to flow between the thermostat and the radiator? Is there supposed to be any flow of water into the top of the radiator when the engine is started cold? I appreciate any help.
