wet sleeve removal question

I'm shortly going to be replacing the sleeves and pistons in my 484. As I have no experience in engine internal work I'm fairly nervous about doing this!!!
My question is, do I need a sleeve puller to get wet sleeves out (and back in), or is it possible using a lump of wood and hammer/hydraulic jack?
