I did not see the (2spool valve) on first post but I wood still go with your SM set up because both of your valves the 2 spool and the valve in the resevoir are ready at all times don't have to lock one to use other as for starting the pump will have the same load on the starter either way. for your hesitation the plumping would make no difference.
