Rear axle on Farmall A

I need advice on removing the rear, driver's side axle, on my 1940 'A'. I have removed the wheel and the inside retaining nuts and washer but can't get the axle out. I have hammmered the wheel hub and it moves about 1/2 inch and then stops. It seems like the inner bearing is frozen to the axle as the bearing moves with the axle. How hard can I hit it without breaking something. Do I need to apply heat? Appreciate all suggestions. Frank Z.
