Back when the letter series were in their prime, many farmers, particularly in our area, planted row crops in 28" rows. This included edible beans, soy beans, sugar beets, and corn. To obtain a width of 56", the dishes had to be turned in. When everything went to 30" rows, then the dishes could be turned out. When the triple ribed rims appeared on the 300 and 400 tractors, the adjustment could be made with the adjustment of the rim and not necessarily the dish. Still farmers had the dishes either dished in or dished out to suit themselves. It does stand to reason that there was less strain on the axles in the dished out position, but sometimes application dictated, and still does how they were set up.
