Your method will work provided that both batteries are equally charged and no bad cells. If they are going down unusally soon the connecting cable should be removed and each load tested on its own merits. Then replace the bad one or best both with new or very clean connections. The secret to starting a 560 Diesel is to have good batteries, clean connections, good working glow plugs, and hold the glow plugs the proper time stated in the manual.
