Aaron: You can use a pick to remove. Make sure you get all of the old packing out as it will disrupt the sealing of new packing. I have found using a drill bit slightly smaller than threads works well and is much faster. It will clean the inside face where packing rests. Turn with hands or pliers only! New packing should slide right in BUT!! I find some packings 10-15%-do not fit longways meaning the brass nut will not find the threads. I have found no surefire way to remove material from new packing to make it fit without destroying packing in process( it collapses)! I rebuild enough though, that I just use in a different carb. Good luck!
