Never seen or heard of a gear driven type. Would be simpler and safer to use a pto driven hyd. pump. I'm not sure how you would be able to change directions on your ram or splitter mechanism.
I'm planning on building a wood splitter for my H. I think I'm going to mount a hyd. pump on the side of the frame and belt drive it off the crankshaft, giving me live hydraulics.
