From your post, I gather that you are using a cutout on your 12 generator based on your statement that the wiring modification for installing a regulator was not required. For a tractor that is used sparingly this may be acceptable but is dependant on the amperage of the generator. On a tractor that is a work tractor and used daily a cutout could allow overcharging the battery. On minimum or no maintenance batteries this overcharging can cook the battery and blow the seals allowing the electrolyte to escape. Some of these batteries can not be serviced thus this shortens their life. I would want a regulator. The battery manufacturers also recommend using a regulated charger on todays batteries. Have you attempted to mount a Geo alternator under the hood of this model tractor? I would not cut the hood either. I have an original 5 window 37 Ford coupe and I appreciate your position on altering something that can't be undone.
