What do you consider a viscisity extender to be? If you use a good quality engine oil, you do not need to add anything to it. The use of a semi-synthetic oil is of a limited value, when used in place of a fully synthetic oil. If you want synthetic use full synthetic. As far as what to use in the winter, I wouldnt be a bit affraid to use SAE 10w. I had a Ford Diesel F-250 that I drove over 200,000 miles and thats all it had during the winter. Granted the synthetic is better that the 10w, but its also about $4.00 per quart and non-synthetic is about $1.00 a quart, and I honestly don't think you are going to see any benefit of using the synthetic. Now to qualify all of this, I myself use Mobil 1 in my truck, but never saw any indication it was of a real benefit in these older engines.
