The alternator connects to one terminal on the ammeter, along with ANY AND ALL loads. The battery connects to the other terminal on the ammeter BY ITSELF. If the ammeter reads backwards, switch the wires on the ammeter from one post to the other. Check the voltage at the battery with a voltmeter. If the tractor has not run for a few hours, the battery should read about 12.5 Volts. Start the tractor. The ammeter should show charge, and the battery voltage should gradually come up to about 14.5 Volts. If the ammeter still shows no charge as the battery voltage is climbing, you have a bad ammeter. When the battery voltage reaches about 14.5, the charge rate will taper off to just enough to keep the battery up. If the ammeter shows no charge AND the battery voltage does not come up, you have charging system problems.
