Any good auto parts store will carry it or get it. Tell clerk you need a ballast resister for your coil. It can also be replaced with a special resistance wire. Don't reduce the length of that wire. No you won't get zapped. Your key switch will be off when you replace it. When energized, it is battery voltage anyway so don't worry. The reason your 504 fires and quits is because your starter solinoid has an internal switch that bypasses the resisted circuit and sends full voltage to coil. This helps while starting the engine.
