That's an eye opener. Why is working it in 3rd hard on the valves ? The motor has a pretty modest compression ratio, only about 6.75:1. It turns slowly, 1650 or so. The motor is not running hot, the gauge barely gets up to the RUN portion. The oil pressure is good. The seats look like a normal width, guides look pretty typical. I'll have to check the rpm with a tach next time I'm plowing. I would be surprised if they drop off 100 rpm, it sure sounds like it is holding steady. It does run a little slower than rated in 4th, but it dies out too quickly to be any faster than third. Besides, it seems like that is a little too fast to cover the trash well. Reliability is important, but if the motor lasts another 10 years before it needs to be reworked, that seems like an acceptable service life. In today's dollars, it would come out to around $230 per year. I'll spend more than that on 5/9th bu. boxes. Not to mention that plowing in second just seems so slow.
